3 Pool Safety Precautions to take if You have Children
Nothing about your pool is more important than how to keep your kids safe. Custom pools these days can come with countless different safety features to protect your children and pets from an accident. We talk a lot about beautiful tile work and smart water features, but none of this stuff would matter if we didn’t make your family’s safety the first priority.
If you have kiddos running around your house, these three features are an absolute must for your swimming pool:
A Safety Fence is Your First Line of Defense
There isn’t a single feature on the market to protect your children more than a high-quality safety fence. When you install a safety fence around your pool, you eliminate the risk of kids getting into the water without adult supervision.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly every single child drowning could be prevented by installing a secure fence around the border of the pool. Keep in mind that the barrier you choose should be tall and solid enough to keep your kids from climbing over. A great rule of thumb is to install a fence around 60 inches high.
Safety Covers are Crucial for Families with Small Kids
We’re all about combining at least two different safety measures to keep your family members safe. In addition to a fence, consider adding a durable cover to your pool when it’s not in use. It’s worth noting that winter and solar pool covers are NOT the same things as safety covers.
Unlike the other two kinds of pool covers, a safety cover must hold at least 485 pounds per five square feet. When you’re on the search for a safety cover, you have two options — mesh and solid.
Mesh covers require little maintenance, are safe to use year-round and are simple to put on and take off. Solid covers are secured with anchors and prevent dirt or debris from entering your clean pool water.
Go High-Tech with an Infrared Alarm System
This is one of the more expensive options out there, but for good reason. Infrared systems are installed around the water line of custom pools to trigger a high-pitched noise when someone enters the water.
While this safety tool doesn’t keep your kids and pets from wandering into the water, it does alert you the second an object over 15 pounds touches the water surface. Don’t worry, the alarm won’t sound if a leaf drops into the water.
