When you step into your backyard this summer you expect to find fabulous clear blue waters in your pool. The only way to ensure this happens is to make sure you’re frequently checking the cleanliness of the water. A clean pool means a happy home owner. Here are a few tips on how to prevent your pool from turning green this summer:

Cause & Effect

The leading causes of algae growth in a pool are improper filtration or circulation, the presence of metal in the water, a low pH balance or an imbalance of chlorine. The key to being on top of the pool game is to constantly balance these important pool elements. Check your pool daily to prevent any imbalances.

Filter, Flow & Repeat

A properly installed pool filter is the first and most important step to preventing/getting rid of green water. You should probably clean out and backwash your filter often to prevent the green build up. The filtration and circulation of water keeps the water from standing still and developing any unwanted growths. Keep the water moving and filtered for around 8-12 hours each day. a timer is a helpful and inexpensive way to make sure your water is thoroughly clean. You can use the timer to split the filtration cycle. For example, run the filter for 4-6 hours in the morning, and then again for 4-6 hours in the evening. The circulation of your pool water is best monitored with a flow meter. The flow rate is easily detected and lets you know your water isn’t standing still and collecting algae.

Chemical Checklist

Algae is certainly stubborn. It’s important to be careful while using chemicals such as chlorine to rid your pool of algae. start by wearing gloves, eye protection and clothes that cover your skin. You should always add chemicals to water and never add water to chemicals. After using the chlorine to kill any present algae, be sure to wash your hands and inspect your clothes for any chemicals. Don’t let the algae come back after you clean it out. Be on top of your pool chemistry and regularly check for free chlorine levels, pH, alkalinity and cyanuric acid. Daily testing is optimal and ensures you’re on top of the job. The faster you detect an abnormality, the easier it is to correct. Algaecide is useful for algae prevention, add this to your pool, at most, weekly. Be sure to test your pool chemistry daily and keep up with Algaecide levels to ensure you’re diving into clear blue waters this summer!
